Who wants to be no one?
I desperately want to be a someone because how else could I be happy?
Surely I get to be a unique, one-of-a-kind person here! Isn’t that what life is about?
So until life demonstrates that trying to be a someone is fighting reality and therefore guaranteed suffering, I will keep trying to find happiness as a person.
And so if I look for teachings, I look for those that allow me to remain a someone.
Perhaps I only need to achieve a more expansive awareness. Perhaps I only need to get rid of limiting thoughts. Perhaps I only need to let go of the things that don’t serve me. Or perhaps I can just believe I’m not a someone. Maybe that’ll work.
It’s all totally understandable. But life seems to be the demonstration that none of this ultimately delivers.
So many philosophies, paths, and approaches seemingly improve the life of the apparent someone. We explore them, picking and choosing among them for many years.
At some point, maybe after enough suffering (who knows), there may be a real shift.
An incredible exhale of relief:
There never was a separate someone.
No one is required to run or manage this experience.
This is utterly free from any need, worry, or effort to be anyone at all.
And there it is: happiness.
